New Scientist is a weekly science and technology magazine, offering in‑depth coverage of cutting‑edge research and innovation.

I joined the web team as Art Director, tasked with bringing a touch of illustrative flair to their online presence — because even the most brilliant science deserves a bit of visual sparkle.

New Scientist was in the final stages of overhauling its online presence, with refreshed websites, newsletters, and social media posts in the works.

They were curious to explore how illustration could elevate their brand. My brief was to give each section of the site its own micro‑identity, using colour and simple imagery to create distinction and personality. This visual language extended naturally into newsletters and iconography.

The introduction of these new colour systems also meant their social media posts needed a rethink.

Given the vast range of topics New Scientist covers, every illustration had to be handled with great care to ensure it complemented, rather than misrepresented, the stories it accompanied.
